Einstein said that time isn’t really real. Actually, James Taylor said that in a song, but it’s mostly true. Time is how we organize a chaotic universe to suit our need for structure. And none of us yearn for structure more than sports people — athletes and fans alike. We measure our games in innings, periods and quarters, and ultimately over years and decades, as the numbers pile up, we compare the stars of today with the ones who came before, the ones whose exploits form our memories of the sports we love.

That’s what motivated us to create a timeline of sports. The Players’ Tribune calls itself the voice of the game, and delivers on that promise with meaningful first-person stories from athletes of all kinds. A timeline gives us a chance to connect with fans and give voice to the athletes of the past, to celebrate their moments big and small, and to remind us that we always stand on what came before. Big Fundamental vs Shaq? How about Wilt vs Russ? Steroid scandal? How about six runners DQ’d from a gold medal race? The arguments may change, but the arguing goes on and on ...
